Program When Ready

This canvas went from a blank slate to laying in my garage being lightly spray painted to create the gray gradient in the background. When I stepped back I saw a face, I knew she was gonna live on this canvas but didn’t see her clearly. Fast forward to me sitting in my living room while my kids napped, a million things going through my mind, I started to bring her to life. Some times my pieces are planned out and other times I’m almost surprised by the strokes my pencil make. It’s like my heart and hand having a conversation my mind isn’t in on until I put the pencil down.

Art can mean a million different things to a million different people but this piece to me represents my journey in womanhood & motherhood. This feeling isn’t exclusive to women but I do believe we feel it more than our male counterpart. The feeling of not regarded as fully human. A machine ready to be programmed when ready. What do you need from me? What box would you like me to fit in? What do you want me to say or not say? Do or not do? It seems they want what they want from us and a step out of line, a human response to pressure or stress, is regarded as attitude, distasteful, weak, a burden….. So why not just say what you really want?? A mindless machine with a petty face.

SURFACE: 16X20 CANVAS, THICKNESS: 1 1/2"
